“Oh, the weather outside is frightful. But the fire is so delightful. And since we’ve no place to go…Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!”
Depending on where you live, you might be experiencing snow or cold weather right now, making it harder to come up with activities to do with your kids. Fortunately, there are a lot of activities that can be done indoors, where it’s warm. Here are some ideas:
1. Movie or TV Show Marathon
Depending on how your family feels about screen time, a good, old-fashioned movie or TV show marathon can be just the cold weather activity. Make it an event by preparing snacks like popcorn or fruit and veggies. Pick a movie genre or show and let the marathon begin.
2. Get Crafty
Rainy days are ideal for doing arts and crafts. Try setting up a crafting corner with construction paper, crayons, markers, glue, and other art supplies and let them use their imaginations to create works of art.
3. Dive Into a Good Book
There’s nothing like curling up with your kids and reading a stack of books. You can create a cozy reading nook with a soft blanket and warm lighting.
4. Bake or Cook Something New
Let the dreary weather inspire some comfort food. Try baking cookies, bread, or cupcakes and enjoy the delicious aroma filling your home. If you’re in the mood for cooking, experiment with some child-friendly recipes.
5. Have an Indoor Picnic
Who says picnics are only for sunny days? Lay out a blanket in your living room, prepare your favorite picnic foods, and enjoy an unconventional dining experience.
6. Board Games and Puzzles
Board games and puzzles are excellent for rainy day bonding. From classics like Monopoly and Scrabble to cooperative games like Pandemic, there’s something for everyone. If you have younger kids, there are simple board games they can play. Our son really enjoyed the game Monkey Around when he was younger because it’s one of those games that’s easy to understand and also requires some physical activity like posing and jumping.
7. Explore Indoor Hobbies
Take the time to pick up or revisit a hobby:
- Knitting/Crocheting: Depending on the age of your child, knitting or crocheting might be a fun, creative activity.
- Writing: Start journaling, write a short story, or compose poetry.
- Music: Practice playing an instrument or create a rainy-day playlist.
8. Play Indoor Games with Kids
For families with children, rainy days can be filled with fun indoor activities like:
- Building forts with pillows and blankets.
- Organizing a treasure hunt.
- Playing charades or hide-and-seek.
Cold and snowy or rainy days don’t have to be dreary. With a little creativity, they can be an opportunity to relax, bond, and try something new. Embrace the cozy vibes and make the most of the weather!
